The stories in Mr. Kafka and other Tales from the Time of the Cult were written mostly in the 1950's and represent the Czech master Bohumil Hrabal at the height of his powers. Seen from the gas-lit streets of post-war Prague, the raucous and dangerous factory floor of a steelworks, a cacophonous open-air dance hall where classical and popular music literally come to blows, a basement studio where a crazed artist attempts to fashion a national icon, or the scaffolding around a decommissioned church from which a disgruntled stonemason witnesses the destruction of a gigantic monument to Stalin he helped to build, these stories capture men and women trapped in an eerily beautiful nightmare, forming hymns to the human spirit in all its misery and splendour.
